It Needs To Be Said--

I was watching the Haiti Relief Telethon on TV and the out-pouring of love and "prayers" was heart-warming.

The music was damn good too.

And I couldn't help but think, amongsts all of those prayers, that if every Haitian church had been, instead, a school of engineering, biology, mechanics, earth sciences, chemistry, and people spent their Sundays learning about Plate Tectonics, earthquakes, lateral support and re-bar...

There would be far less need for prayers, no need for a telethon, and we'd be talking about the resilient and well-prepared Haitian people instead of the desperate and decimated Haitian people who, of course, are "still praying"...

Well said.

I prayed, "God, I'm hungry!", God said, "Get off you butt and go make yourself a sandwich!"

God is not in the business of giving free hand outs, contrary to what many may think.

Sad but true.

Oh, don't you just love the uninvited interlopers who can't be bothered to read your post before commenting how you should hot-foot it over to their(usually commercial) blog? Bet you feel so honoured, eh? (Smile).

Sadly Scott, the folk in Haiti had little other than prayer to focus on, education has to take a back seat to survival, even before the earthquake, it was a luxury few could ever hope to afford.

Scott, I think you make a very good point. Or if all of our aid now had been proactive rather than reactive....all those dollars could've been used to build all those schools of engineering, biology, etc.

Yeah, I noticed the real lack of re-bar in most of the footage...most were just blocks stacked up with a roof over them. I noticed in one shot that there was re-bar in the flooring, but the walls, again, were just cinder block!
