Gay Potpourri

I seem to be backing up with lake photos...

Or walk photos...

Here are just five...

I got into an interesting discussion today about gay marriage. I asked why the government needs to be involved in the contractuals of two consenting people?

I mean, what purpose does it serve to have government control marriage? Do we not make contracts all the time without the consent of government?

I had a bunch of gay men and women think I was awful for declaring that government has no business declaring that "marriage is between a man and a woman".

It seems they wanted to be accepted by government, rather than fight to remove government from the consent equation.

Politicians appease religious constituents by denying gays the rights to marriage. (Unless gay bigotry goes away real soon, the right for a gay man or women to marry will always be up to the majority, and we all know the majority are small minded and bigoted).

What I didn't count on, was that the hard liberal views most gays hold in general require that government DO for society, and therefore, the very idea of taking government out of the marriage equation seemed like purposeful sabotage of their desire for equality. I had gays of all stripes giving me a hearty fuck you today. Me. Mr. I'll bake you a chocolate penis cake for coming out...

Barack Obama says marriage is between a man and a woman. McCain says the same thing. Both of these statements contain two ingredients I find distasteful-- one, that religion is playing politics and politicians are using the issue to pander to a religious base for votes... and two, that the right to equality and happiness are being withheld from a very large minority in the US of A.

In California there will be a referendum of sorts. The population will be asked whether or not gay and lesbians should be allowed to marry.

Imagine that?

To me, that's like voting on whether women and blacks should have the right to vote.

What century is this again?

"Me. Mr. I'll bake you a chocolate penis cake for coming out..." That's very funny!

I'm disappointed in Barack Obama's views; I'd assumed he was more enlightened than that. The way that religion influences public policy in the States is really quite worrying.

This last Saturday I had the thrill of seeing my son get married to his partner, Keith. That was something I thought I'd never live to see. Now it doesn't matter what California decides in November because he's married and the homophobics who drew up the ballot measure can't take that away from him even if the measure is voted into place.

I agree that it's a right we shouldn't even have to debate, let alone vote on. I have yet to meet a gay who made a choice to be gay, so why should they be considered somehow different?

Had a good friend in high school that slipped on an old log in the river like that and got stabbed to death! Don't do that!

As you can imagine, there was a lot of legal discussion about what would happen if the law prohibiting same sex marriage was put back into place here in California. The "best" legal minds said that any marriages that had taken place while there was no law against it would remain valid. I guess only time is going to tell.

I was happy to see the backers of our anti-gay ballot proposition get slapped down when they filed a suit to get the language changed on their measure. They objected to it saying that it would prohibit same sex marriage. They wanted it to say that marriage is between a man and a woman. If passed, this measure would be written into our state constitution. So far pools show the measure will fail. Keep your fingers crossed.

Civil union = government business (only because of the rights and priviledges that go with such unions.)

marriage = church business.
