Another Chapter From My Real Life...

Three nights ago, I walked into the house for my final round of ‘checking up on Mum“. I found her slumped in the seat of her walker, one leg wearing fresh pants, the other leg waiting for her to finish what she started, her head slumped over to her right shoulder and drool coming out of her mouth.

“Momma!” Her husband came to see and I asked him, “how long has she been like this?”

“She came in here about three minutes ago.”

“She’s having a stroke. Call 911.”

I actually got to meet five of my neighbors at eleven o’clock at night. The volunteers from the local fire department all got out of bed and were here within ten minutes of the call. I kneeled behind Mum all this time, waiting, holding her upright and keeping her from slinking out of the chair and hurting herself. An ambulance arrived maybe by fourteen minutes, and within twenty minutes, she was heading off to Grants Pass to the ER there, a first class facility.

I went inside and calmed down her husband, who was very shaken up by this. Then I made me some coffee, put on some deodorant and started to head out myself to the hospital. Our neighbor who dwells in a cabin in a forest across the road, drove over on her mobility scooter and yelled at me before I got completely out of the driveway.

“I heard it on my scanner!” she yelled. “I had a stroke too! Tell your Mom to get a scooter and we can ride up and down the street together!”

“I’ll tell her!” I shouted back, and then I made the forty minute drive into the hospital.

(To be continued...)

In the midst of a medical crisis your neighbour asked you to tell your Mum to get a scooter so they can ride up and down the street together?

Seriously, I have to visit you sometime ... never a moment of boredom.
