Living In A Dream...

I keep my dogs in at night. We have critters that wander out there after dark. Mostly skunks and deer, but mountain lions have been spotted in my yard and the coyotes and foxes love to come by and harass the dogs by sitting on the other side of the fence and barking at them.

It makes them bark back.

So if I don't want to listen to barking dogs all night, I bring them in and shut the windows as well as the doors.

"Shut up dogs. Now go to sleep..."

And this works quite well.

The other night, though, somehow, my smallish shepherd-cross Rosalynn aka "Bubbie" inadvertently got shut out. I don't know what happened, but I failed to get her in before I shut it all down. Perhaps I thought she was already in? Prolly.

And I went to sleep and slept grandly, snoring like a chainsaw for awhile (most likely) and then, in the middle of the night, I started dreaming...

In my dream two mountain lions were laying siege against me. I lived in a two-storied cabin with a back upstairs deck. From there, I could see the two mountain lions leaping easily up onto my back fence, which was fortress-tall and made of stone...

In the mouth of one of the snarling lions was my now-dead cat, and as the mountain lion landed sleek-footed on the top of the wall, it flung the dead cat into my yard towards me and roared a mountain lion roar...

Suddenly, my 5 month old puppy Badu (pronounced Bah Doo) leaped to her feet and started barking at the door...

I know this because it woke me up.

So the last thing I knew, I had two mountain lions after me and now my puppy had her hackles up and she was staring at the door, growling her most menacing puppy growl...

And then I heard the scratching...

There was something clawing at the door... trying to get at me...

My first thought was for my flashlight and my gun...

What the hell? How did those mountain lions make the leap from my dreams into my yard?

Luckily, I figured it all out in time to let Bubbie in before the mountain lions ate her.

A little disorienting to say the least - were there mountain lions outside after all? Or just in the dream?

I often hear things from the real world in my dreams...phones ringing, doors knocked, dogs barking - and they wake me up. Sometimes I hear the same things in my dreams and wake up but it wasn't real. I could have sworn though.

OMG, enough to give the stoutest of hearts a cardiac arrest! I'm not really laughing (honest!), I still vividly recall a dream I had years back - I woke up screaming convinced there was a bat fluttering under the covers (that was last time hubby ever gave himself any ideas about waking up the sleeping lady)..

Running into two bears up the road from you was enough wildlife for me in the good 'ol USA.
