Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I heard about Rennaisance Faire and the Society for Creative Anachronism--not the same thing but a lot of overlap. I was always interested in the SCA but never got involved, but I had some friends who were 'nobility' in the kingdom out in Missouri and heard all about it.
Guess reality TV just doesn't do it for some people.
I don't think we have that brand of wingnut out here.
It's pretty easy to make fun of these people. But hey, they are out there having fun. Earnest fun. Very earnest fun.
There was a girl in my dorm who was active in SCA. We had a heated discussion about why anyone would consent to being one of the cerfs or whatever in the club.
If you get bored go to Hulu.com and look up 'Darkon'. It's a LARP documentary, very similar to SCA. It's rather eye opening to see the lengths people will go to escape reality.
Looks like the setting of an old Monty Python movie...
