Dragon Fly-Bys With A Better Eye...

Well, after taking a few spontaneous dragonfly pictures, I figured I could go back and get some good photos this time. By that, I mean a photo that has aesthetic value on top of having a dragonfly in it. The first picture is of the lighting and the bare bush I stalked.

The rest are what I got in between dragonfly sex which was going on all around me.

Did you know male dragonflies will grab an already inseminated female in mid-flight and "twirl" her around to eject the semen, so that he may be the one to do the honors instead?

Try getting these pictures before the sun went down amidst all of this "twirling"!

Congrats on your win in Jason's contest. I was one of the participants as well.

Great dragon fly pictures!

My latest issue of Birds & Blooms has an article on Skimmers. They are a type of dragonfly but much more beautifully patterned. Looking at the wings of the ones you photographed I'd have to say they are Skimmers. Of course, I could be wrong. In any event, they are the most beautiful dragonflys I've seen.

Did you know the male dragonfly punctures the females head in order to keep her in place during the deed?

Excellent pics...you're so talented Scott.
